So, staying with Plan A...
Kevin Love 33/17...Nikola Pekovic 30/12....that's 50% of your offense, again.
Game over.
Houston had a six minute stretch to start off the fourth quarter, with the Twolves in their ineffective 2-3 zone, which got them back into the game (95-94) only for Kevin Love to stomp (metaphorically ofcourse) on their necks with 8 consecutive points and push the game beyond them. That was a star player taking over and putting the game to bed. Love was amazing.....boo all you like!
Pek had his evil way with anyone that Houston threw at him and was a massive presence in the paint...."Too Big!!...Too Big!!" was all that Clyde the Glide could muster from the sidelines...and indeed Pek was onto something really big...a career scoring night....our "Bear" was most definitely better than their "Bert", it wasn't even close.
Wes Johnson recorded a +/- of +23.....yes...suck that one in.....on 4-6 shooting..along with his 9 points he also had 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks. Although the +/- flatters him it would be disingenuous of me or anyone else who has been so openly "on his case" recently not to hold our hands up and say..."Well done Wes." The ironic thing was that he playing really good basketball before having to be forced out with two fouls. This stemmed from his aggressiveness on Kevin Martin. In the last Min - Hou game I thought that K-Mart was just plain bad and Wes didn't really need to do too much...last night was different. Wes was all over him like a rash and the only points that Martin seemed to be getting were long, long threes. McHale obviously wasn't too enamored and we saw plenty of Courtney Lee. We all know that this is just one game and Wes Johnson has been pretty poor this season but if he can give us 10/5 and great defense on a consistent basis then we need to see that as a massive step forwards.
The Unicorn was back to his sparkling best also...just failing to reach another points/assists double/double with 18/9. His penetration was good last night and his jumper looked better than it has for a few games....Lowry is a handful but Rubio has an edge....his passes to Pek and Love are often sublime in their creativity (his lightning quick behind-the-back pass to K-Love in the fourth drew gasps of admiration from the Houston crowd). Admittedly Rubio(6), Pek(6) and Love (4) had of the majority of the Twolves total turnovers(19) between them but when you take into consideration the amount of touches these guys get and what they contributed...it's hard to complain.
For once I could get a handle on Michael Beasley only playing 18.50. I thought he played really well in those minutes and was passing the rock like a PG. He also converted some shots and played sound defense during a nice active spell midway through the second Q. That was to be his role last night and he played it. This is where Mike needs to be just now until he can build upon his consistency. I think patience will pay off but I'm not certain whether he'll be retained...?
Luke Ridnour played another steady, steady game and contributed when asked...I love Luke Ridnour....did I ever tell you that?
Two steps up....can we now avoid three steps back...another hard stretch coming up.....let's stick with Plan A - FEED THE BEAR!
